Connecticut Farms Newly Certified Organic
The original version of this story included Lathrop Farm in Lebanon, CT, which we mistakenly described as having been certified organic for maple syrup in March of 2024. In fact, they were certified for organic maple syrup production in 2023, and have been organic certified for vegetables, flowers, herbs, chestnuts, and fruit since 2022.
CT NOFA is excited to welcome two Connecticut farms to the certified organic community. These farms – Northwest Corner Farm (Winchester), and Sweet Ring Farm (Newtown) – are also all participants in CT NOFA programs. Northwest Corner Farm is a participant in our Farm Share program, which provides steeply discounted CSA shares to individuals and families in need of financial food assistance. Sweet Ring Farm is a participant in the Transition to Organic Partnership Program (TOPP), in which CT NOFA supports participating farms’ efforts to transition to certified organic status by pairing them with experienced ‘mentor’ farms. These mentors then guide and consult them through the organic certification process, helping them more easily navigate hurdles to certification. Read more about these newly certified organic farms, below.
Northwest Corner Farm – Winchester
Northwest Corner Farm in Winchester, CT, has proudly announced its achievement of organic certification. This milestone marks a significant step in the farm’s commitment to sustainable and environmentally friendly farming practices and makes Northwest Corner Farm the only certified organic farm in Winchester, as well as one of few in their region.
Joining the ranks of neighboring organic farms like High Silo Farm, Adamah Farm, and Wild Carrot Farm LLC, Northwest Corner Farm is now part of a growing community committed to environmentally friendly and sustainable agriculture. This certification opens new opportunities for the farm, allowing them to offer high-quality organic produce to their customers and contribute to a healthier ecosystem.
The journey to organic certification was a testament to the dedication and hard work of the farm’s team, particularly Farm Manager Steph and Farmer Emeritus Adam. This significant achievement comes thanks to their efforts in implementing sustainable farming practices and ensuring compliance with rigorous organic standards.
As a participant in CT NOFA’s Farm Share program (which provides discounted CSA shares to those in financial need), Northwest Corner Farm is proud to now be able to offer certified organic produce to its CSA members and looks forward to continuing its mission of providing fresh, organic produce to the community while promoting sustainable farming practices.
Sweet Ring Farm – Newtown
In 2020, Gavin and Autumn embarked on an exciting journey to establish Sweet Ring Farm, a diversified organic farm in Sandy Hook, CT. Gavin’s 15+ years of experience in horticulture, gardening, and organic farming, and Autumn’s 10+ years of design expertise, provided a unique combination of talents, allowing Sweet Ring Farm to provide their community with fresh produce and create beautiful, edible landscapes.
Sweet Ring Farm is thrilled to announce its official certification as an organic farm. Having always used regenerative and sustainable farming practices, this certification represents an official recognition of the farm’s ongoing commitment to environmentally responsible agriculture. As Sweet Ring Farm celebrates this exciting achievement, they look forward to continuing to provide fresh, organic produce to their customers while nurturing the land with regenerative practices.
Sweet Ring Farm’s success in achieving organic certification was made possible, in part, by their TOPP mentor, Patrick Horan. Patrick is the co-owner of Waldingfield Farm in Washington, CT, which has been a certified organic farm for more than 30 years.
