The Venture Farming Institute Announces Free Agricultural Training for Aspiring BIPOC Farmers

The Venture Farming Institute (VFI) is an intensive training experience designed for new and beginning farmers of color in CT and RI. This training will feature trainers of color while centering Black, Indigenous, People of Color (BIPOC) voices and experiences on farming and land stewardship in CT and RI. VFI will strengthen the resilience and improve the likelihood of success of a growing community of BIPOC farmers in our region by giving them tools to thrive (new networks, equitable access to resources and financial support) and improving their ability to withstand disruption and setbacks (financial, weather-related, personal).

This new cohort-based training program that will feature 72 hours of online course training and 8 farm field days (choice of participating in CT or RI locations) for up to twenty (20) participants from both Connecticut and Rhode Island.

Please note, this program will be at no cost to training participants.

The Venture Farming Institute (VFI) es un entranamiento intensivo diseñado para agricultores de color nuevos y principiantes en CT y RI. Este Entrenamiento contará con entrenadores de color y al mismo tiempo se centrará en las voces y experiencias de personas negras, indígenas y de color (BIPOC) sobre agricultura y administración de la tierra en CT y RI. VFI fortalecerá la resiliencia y mejorará la probabilidad de éxito de una creciente comunidad de agricultores BIPOC en nuestra región, brindándoles herramientas para prosperar (nuevas redes, acceso equitativo a recursos y apoyo financiero) y mejorando su capacidad para resistir interrupciones y reveses (financieros, relacionado con el clima, personal).Este nuevo programa de entrenamientos basado en cohortes contará con 72 horas de cursos de entrenamientos virtuales y 8 días de reuniones presenciales (opción de participar en granjas ubicados CT o RI) para veinte (20) participantes de Connecticut y Rhode Island.

Support Staff for the Farmland Access Grant Program

On February 20, the Connecticut Appropriations Committee will hold their public hearing on Department of Agriculture funding appropriations. In the previous legislative session, they passed the Farmland Access Grant Program, which aims to help farmers overcome barriers to accessing land and create viable pathways for farm succession. However, there is currently no funding for staff to administer this program, which would effectively render the program non-operational. We urge concerned constituents to contact their state legislators – especially those who legislators also sit on the Appropriations Committee – and ask them to provide funding for these critical staff positions.

2026 Seed Swap at CT NOFA Winter Conference

January 28, 2026

The Seed Swap Table is where conference attendees can exchange seeds and diversify their gardens and farms with unique and regionally adapted varieties. The swap is open to all conference participants, from home gardeners to experienced growers. Participants are invited to bring labeled seeds to share and take home new seeds to try. The swap operates on a trust-based, give-and-take system — bring what you can and take what sparks your interest.
