This 4-week intensive course for farmers and gardeners will study the physical, chemical, and biological properties of healthy living soil, along with growing methods that work with nature to produce healthy plants and nutrient-dense food. The course is comprised of three virtual sessions and one in-person session. For the in-person session, attendees may choose between two locations, either in Ridgefield, CT or Newport, RI.

This event is free for all participants thanks to grant funding through the Transition to Organic Partnership Program.
LIVE VIRTUAL SESSIONS
Week 1 – Wednesday, September 10, 6 – 7:30 pm: Physical Properties of Soil
Learn how to understand what type of soil and conditions you are working with, using simple tools and methods. We will explore ways to amend soil for best structure, texture, and tilth.
Week 2 – Wednesday, September 17, 6 – 7:30 pm: Chemical Properties of Soil
Study of chemical soil tests and what they tell us about our soil/compost. We will learn regenerative methods to achieve optimal levels of macro and micronutrients, balance pH, and improve Cation Exchange Capacity.
Week 3 – Wednesday, September 24, 6 – 7:30 pm: Biological Properties of Soil
Using the microscope, we will explore the ‘soil food web’, to understand the living properties of soil, and how biology promotes soil health. We will study ways to protect and nurture the life in our soils, to produce the healthiest food possible.
IN–PERSON SESSION

Saturday, September 27, 10am – 1pm (The Hickories Farm | Ridgefield, CT)
Saturday, October 4, 10am – 1pm (Ocean Hour Farm | Newport, RI)
We will meet in-person at both The Hickories Farm in Ridgefield, CT, and Ocean Hour Farm in Newport, RI, to put these 3 soil health methods into practice. Registered attendees may choose which in-person session they wish to attend. Together we will determine soil physical properties, analyze the chemical soil test, and use the microscope to determine the life in the soil. Bring a sample of soil/compost from your farm/garden to check out under the microscope.
