Common Ground High School presents the 2024 Farm & Garden Conference!
WHAT: A Full Day of HANDS ON workshops on urban growing, cooking, education + more. Open TO ALL!
WHERE: Common Ground High School, Urban Farm and Environmental Education Center, 358 Springside Ave, New Haven, CT
WHO: YOU! Teachers, urban farmers, backyard gardeners, anyone who wants to incorporate growing food and food justice into their lives or work.

YOUTH + KIDS:
- The Kids Track is recommended for young people ages 6-12 accompanied by an adult at the conference.
- The Kids track has a minimum contribution of $5 so that we can pay for staff time.
- This conference is NOT a drop off program. Children, youth and HS students must be accompanied by an adult at the general conference unless otherwise arranged.
- If you are registering a child, please select “Kids Track” for each session.

Session 1
Learning Garden Exploration
Discover Common Ground’s Learning Garden and discuss strategies for success with Sylvia Brewster, our Learning Garden Coordinator. Topics will include strategic planning for high traffic, kids, & classes; seasonal crops & succession planting; garden maintenance.

Ask a Beekeeper
Join beekeepers Alex and Tim from Huneebee Project (HBP), as they discuss their work and answer your beekeeping questions. Tim will also share his love for a humble but essential tool –the cardboard nuc box — and show all the ways he uses it. While this workshop will be geared toward beekeepers with some experience and is not an introduction to beekeeping, basic/introductory questions are welcome!
Huneebee Project is a New Haven based non-profit social enterprise that develops job skills and connects youth to the environment through beekeeping.

In this workshop you will learn different strategies to grow your own vegetables in small spaces and or/containers

Transformative Trash Talk
This one-hour workshop guided by Common Ground’s own Compost Coordinator will inspire you to rethink your relationship to waste within our throwaway culture. Join us to connect with the social justice and spiritual nature of creative reuse and closed-loop systems. Walk away as yet another joyful member of the “cult of compost”.

Kids’ Track (all three sessions)
Have your child explore Common Ground while you participate in workshops! This track is for children ages 6-12. Activities are offered in mixed age groups and children will have the opportunity to enjoy a variety of activities including time with the farm animals, outdoor play, and other farm and forest fun.
Session 2
BioBlitz
Biodiversity is essential to the health of an ecosystem. A bioblitz is a communal effort to record species in a given location. It is a great way to engage students in learning about their environment and the variety of life in it, while generating useful scientific data. Explore the biodiversity at Common Ground through a bioblitz led by former New Haven Public School teacher Kattie Leonnfu. How many species will we find? And how can we use this tool to excite our students about science?

A guided case study of the “Green Monster” climate bill, which includes wide ranging climate change mitigation legislation. What it would accomplish? What happened to it? and How to get it passed?

Mushroom Mania; Introductory Dive into Fungi
The workshop begins with an introduction to fungi, one of the most diverse and essential kingdoms of life on Earth. Participants will learn about the basic characteristics of fungi, their role in ecosystems, and their unique life cycle. From decomposers to symbiotic partners with plants, fungi play crucial roles that often go unnoticed. A hands-on activity where each participant will create their own oyster mushroom grow bucket. Oyster mushrooms (Pleurotus ostreatus) are delicious and relatively easy to cultivate at home, making them ideal for beginners in mushroom cultivation.

The Hidden Life of Compost
Join Monique Bosch as she shares her methods of composting, with the goal of creating amendments that ensure your soil is healthy and alive. We’ll look at compost, worm castings, and compost tea under the microscope and learn how beneficial microbes help us grow nutrient dense food.

Integrated Pest Management for the Home Gardener & Small Scale Grower
Join farmer Diane to learn about one of her favorite topics: Integrated Pest Management (IPM)! In this workshop participants will learn about the principles IPM, see how we apply IPM them at the CG farm, and learn how you can apply techniques to combat pests and diseases in your own space. Come with questions and ready to share your wisdom!
Manejo integrado de plagas para jardineros domésticos y agricultores a pequeña escala
Únase a la agricultora Diane para aprender sobre uno de sus temas favoritos: el manejo integrado de plagas (MIP). El propósito de este taller es fomentar el crecimiento comunitario por compartir juegos infantiles tradicionales. Se invitará a las familias a compartir con sus propios hijos los juegos que practicaban cuando eran niños, ayudando a rescatar y promover juegos de antiguas culturas y sociedades precoloniales. Los participantes aprenderán y reflexionarán sobre cómo el juego ha evolucionado a través de culturas y generaciones, explorarán el papel del juego en diferentes épocas y descubrirán formas de integrar estos juegos tradicionales en las experiencias de aprendizaje y juego de hoy en día.
Rescuing Our Grandparents’ Games: Preserving Traditions and Promoting Cultural Diversity

The purpose of this workshop is to foster community growth by sharing traditional childhood games. Families will be invited to share the games they played as children with their own kids, helping to rescue and promote games from ancient pre-colonial cultures and societies. Participants will learn and reflect on how play has evolved across cultures and generations, explore the purpose of play in different eras, and discover ways to integrate these traditional games into modern-day learning and play experiences
Medicinal Herbs
Learn about the benefits of medicinal herbs through a mindful and meditative experience that focuses on connecting you back to yourself. Participants will create their own herbal blends to take home.
