Biochar Demonstration

Transform wood waste into valuable soil amendment!

Join Liz Dupont-Diehl at The Hickories on Sunday, July 19 for a demonstration on the process for creating biochar and a description of its history, properties, and uses.

Wear sturdy shoes and clothes to help tend the fire, and bring a bucket if you want to bring home some raw biochar.

Farmers and scientists are rediscovering biochar – a valuable soil amendment that can decrease the need for pesticides and watering, and increase soil health and production. Biochar is a stable form of carbon which improves soil structure, water retention, and nutrient availability, leading to healthier and more productive soils. It also helps fight climate change by capturing carbon in the soil rather than releasing it to the atmosphere.

Biochar was the basis of Terra Preta, or Black Earth, found throughout the world where ancient people enriched their soil to allow it to produce abundant crops.

Liz Dupont-Diehl has studied biochar with Kelpie Wilson, author of The Biochar Handbook, and has worked in advocacy, nonprofits, and journalism throughout Connecticut. She is currently an intern in the UConn Master Gardener Program and works for the CT Citizen Action Group.
