DESCRIPTION:THIS SESSION IS NOW FULL\n \nClick here for other dates and locations \n\nCourse Overview\nParticipants will view various soils and composts\, looking at the different soil structures and the microbes that thrive in healthy soil. Demonstrations include how to prepare a slide for viewing\, what you might find and how to evaluate your findings. Participants will be trained to analyze the following: \n\nBacteria : Fungi ratios – what they mean and why they’re important\nAggregate structure in soil/compost\nBacteria numbers and diversity\nQuality of fungi and what that means for your soil\nPredators – identify and quantify both aerobic and anaerobic microbes\nCompost tea and extracts – microbial populations that exist in real time\n\nThroughout the training we will discuss ways to create healthy\, living soil using regenerative agriculture techniques. At the completion of the training you will be ready to use your microscope to evaluate soil and compost\, with the ability to store the information in written and visual form\, to share\, and compare with future samples. \nTraining includes: \n\nOMAX Digital Compound Microscope\n2 Live Virtual Training Sessions (schedule below)\n3 Recorded Virtual Training Sessions (can be viewed at any time)\n1 In-Person training (select your location at registration)\n\n\nCourse Schedule\nThis course will be conducted over 2 live virtual trainings\, 3 recorded virtual sessions (which can be viewed at any time)\, and 1 in-person training session. \n2 Live Virtual Trainings (via Zoom)\n\nSeptember 23\, 6:00pm-7:30pm\nSeptember 30\, 6:00pm-7:30pm\n\nParticipants who register after these virtual sessions have started\, or for any participants who are unable to attend a live virtual session\, recorded versions will be made available. \n3 Recorded Virtual Trainings (available any time)\nThree recorded microscopy training sessions will be made available to all participants\, for immediate or future use. \nIn-Person Training\n\nOctober 26\, 10:00am-1:00pm: Simsbury Community Farm\, Simsbury\, CT\n\nUnable to make the in-person training? Click here for other dates and locations. \n\nTestimonials\nIn May of 2023\, the NOFA-NY education team had the great privilege to participate in soil microscopy training with Monique Bosch through CT-NOFA. The virtual training time let us get familiar with microscopes\, learn to identify aggregates\, fungal hyphae\, nematodes\, and some soil structure basics. The in-person training at Bard College was incredible! We found our own soil samples and analyzed them with students from the college\, allowing us to test our teaching skills and gain confidence. I highly recommend Monique and this program. I have been able to work with farmers and gardeners now to look at their soil structures and teach them about what they see. \nSamantha (NOFA-NY) \nAt Assawaga Farm\, our microscope is an indispensable tool for maintaining and improving our soil’s health. We use it to assess the biology of many things on the farm including potting soil\, compost\, teas\, as well as general soil tests from our fields\, and it allows us a better understanding of what the soil and crops need to be healthy\, productive\, and sustainable. Looking at our farm through a microscope opens up a whole new perspective that we use to inform our decisions. \nAlex Carpenter (Assawaga Farm\, Putnam\, CT)

SUMMARY:Organic Pest and Disease Management
DESCRIPTION:This event is part of CT NOFA’s Skill Share program\, produced in partnership with UConn Extension’s Solid Ground program. \nJoin Shuresh Ghimire\, UConn Extension IPM educator at Lathrop Farmstead as we explore the different pests and diseases vegetable farmers can face in a season and how to manage them in a organic way. This 3-hour event will provide a hands on opportunity to see what are the sorts of things we are facing this time of year\, but also how earlier pests and diseases have been managed. Being certified organic always makes it more important to understand the firm boundaries of what you can and can’t do\, so if you are interested in transitioning your farm to organic\, or are in the early stages of your certified organic farm\, this would be a great skill share to attend. \nThis field day is free to attend. SUMMARY:Compost Tea Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Join CT NOFA as we explore how to make compost tea for various applications\, and what that looks like under the microscope. Compost tea is produced by actively aerating compost in water with added amendments. Beneficial microbes from the compost consume the amendments\, multiply by the billions\, and in 24 hours\, the finished compost tea can be applied to offer plant-available nutrients directly to the leaves and roots of plants. \nWe’ll brew various recipes\, from home-brewed tea in a 5-gallon bucket\, to a 50-gallon large scale brew for farms\, then apply the tea using various methods. \nAOLCPs can earn 3 CEUs and attend the course for only $20. Active NOFA members may also attend for only $20. Email us to receive the discount code before registering. \nCLICK HERE TO REGISTER.

SUMMARY:Farm Bill Forum
DESCRIPTION:Among the many pieces of legislation that have been held up by the chaos in the US House of Representatives is the Farm Bill. The Farm Bill is the most important piece of public policy shaping the U.S. food and farm system. It comes up for reauthorization every five years\, including this year. Whether you realize it or not\, the Farm Bill has an impact on your life and your community\, and it helps shape the society in which we live. After decades of corporate influence\, the Farm Bill has enabled and reinforced an agriculture system that’s divorced from the needs of both consumers and farmers. We’re all paying for the social and environmental consequences\, and the system itself is unsustainable\, threatening our long-term food security as well as our climate. \nPanelists \n\nDr. Kimberly Stoner\, Director of Advocacy\, CT NOFA; Steering Committee member\, C3M; and Agricultural Scientist Emerita\, CT Agricultural Experiment Station\nPeter Zapata\, M.P.H.\, Farm-Based Wellness Program Manager\, Gather New Haven\nRobert Chang\, Co-Director and Director of Policy\, Northeast Farmers of Color Land Trust\, and organic farmer at Echo Farm\, Woodstock\, CT\nMC Whalen\, Coordinator\, New CT Farmer Alliance and farmer at Massaro Community Farm\, Woodbridge\, CT\n\nClick here to register to join us on October 22 @ 7pm by Zoom for the Farm Bill Forum\, hosted by the CT Climate Crisis Mobilization (C3M)\, the Interreligious EcoJustice Network (IREJN)\, and CT NOFA.

Read more here\, and join CT NOFA’s mailing list to receive updates on our advocacy efforts\, as well as action items you can take to help us create a more equitable and organic Connecticut. \n\nvan Rossum is a veteran environmentalist on a mission to use our state and federal constitutions to empower activists and provide hope to communities everywhere seeking to address environmental racism\, the climate crisis\, and the ongoing ravages of polluted water and air\, toxic contamination\, and withering ecosystems nationwide. She is the founder of Green Amendments For The Generations\, a national nonprofit organization dedicated to inspiring passage of Green Amendments in every state across the U.S. that would recognize and protect environmental rights on par with other inalienable civic and political freedoms such as speech and property.  \nIn 2023\, Connecticut joined over a dozen states that have active Green Amendment efforts underway. The CT Environmental Rights Amendment was introduced in the General Assembly and had a public hearing in the Environment Committee. Although the CT Environmental Rights Amendment gained support from over 30 environmental\, civic\, and religious organizations\, it was not brought up for a vote by the committee. Books can be purchased at the New Haven events or through bit.ly/thegreenamendment. \nAbout The Green Amendment Second Edition \nWe have reached a critical tipping point in our fight for the environment: Corporations profit off climate change\, natural disasters devastate homes\, BIPOC communities continue to suffer disproportionately from pollution\, and the most vulnerable suffer the health effects of pollution. Yet our laws are designed to accommodate this destruction rather than prevent it. Without government support\, it’s no wonder people feel powerless. \nFortunately\, there is a solution. With The Green Amendment (Disruption Books\, November 1\, 2022\, Second Edition)\, Maya K. van Rossum lays the groundwork for an inspirational new agenda promoting environmental constitutionalism—one that will finally empower people\, level the playing field\, and provide real hope for communities everywhere.  \nFeaturing forewords by Mark Ruffalo and Kerri Evelyn Harris\, this updated edition of her trailblazing 2017 book invites readers to join the growing movement where our state and federal constitutions make a clean\, safe\, and healthy environment an enforceable right. Through compelling interviews with activists on the ground\, clear evidence from experts\, and heartbreaking stories from those hit hardest by environmental ruin\, The Green Amendment demonstrates how our current U.S. system of environmental protection is failing communities; but then lights a transformational path forward using our constitutions. Under Maya’s leadership\, the future of constitutional environmentalism is a bright one. In this second edition\, she also turns her attention to the often-neglected issues of environmental racism\, the climate crisis\, the human health devastation caused by environmental degradation\, and the importance of protecting future generations from pollution and environmental harm. \nThe Green Amendment seeks to revolutionize the United States system of environmental laws and governance by transforming environmental protection from an unfulfilled promise driven by politics and industry to a constitutionally enforceable RIGHT of the people.

SUMMARY:2022 State of Organic Seed Webinar
DESCRIPTION:Join OSA’s Kiki Hubbard and Jared Zystro\, and host eOrganic\, for a timely webinar on May 17\, 2022. Organic seed represents the first link in the organic supply chain\, serving as the foundation of organic integrity from seed to plate. Every five years\, OSA releases the State of Organic Seed report as a progress report and action plan for increasing the organic seed supply while fostering seed grower networks and policies that aim to decentralize power and ownership in seed systems. OSA recently published a third update to this report. The 2022 report represents 15 years of data that helps the organic community understand trends in organic seed sourcing\, organic seed research investments\, and more. \nThere was very little organic seed available when the National Organic Program (NOP) was implemented in 2002. Twenty years later\, the organic seed supply has grown tremendously\, and certified organic growers are still required to plant organic seed when commercially available. OSA’s newest findings show that most organic growers still plant non-organic seed for at least part (if not all) of their operations. While there’s evidence that organic seed sourcing is increasing among smaller vegetable producers\, progress across crop types is generally stagnant. In other words\, OSA’s most recent findings demonstrate no meaningful improvement in organic producers using more organic seed compared to five years ago. \nThis webinar will share the report’s findings and recommendations\, which are informed by numerous surveys and data sets. Webinar topics include: \nTrends in how much organic seed is being planted in the U.S.\nBarriers to growing the organic seed supply\nChallenges in enforcing the organic seed regulation\nOrganic seed production challenges and needs\nOrganic seed producer networks\nInvestments in organic plant breeding and organic seed research\nPerspectives on intellectual property rights (IPR)\nPerspectives on climate change\nOrganic seed policy solutions
