Join naturalist\, wild foods enthusiast Russ Cohen\, author of Wild Plants I Have Known…and Eaten\, for a one-hour webinar featuring two dozen of the tastiest edible weeds\, invasive species and common native species the Commonwealth has to offer.  Russ will present information on: \n\n\nIdentification tips\nEdible portion(s) and season(s) of availability\nPreparation methods\nGuidelines for safe and environmentally-responsible foraging\n\nInstructor:  \nRuss Cohen\, naturalist and wild foods enthusiast\, loves to connect to nature by nibbling on it\, and teaching others how to do the same\, which he has been doing so for over four decades.  In addition\, since his retirement from the Mass. Dept. of Fish and Game five years ago\, Russ is playing the role of Johnny Appleseed for edible native species. He has set up a nursery outside of Boston where he is raising plants from seed\, most of which he has collected himself.  At the same time\, Russ is establishing partnerships with land trusts\, municipalities\, state and federal agencies\, schools and colleges\, tribal groups\, organic farms and others to plant edible native species from his nursery on appropriate places on their properties.

Dina Brewster\, farmer and director of CT Northeast Organic Farming Association (NOFA)\, will teach homeowners how to become land stewards by caring for their lawns organically. With basic knowledge of soil health\, organic land care principles\, and a few farmer friends\, you can easily identify ways your lawn and backyard can heal the environment while saving you time\, effort\, aggravation\, and money. \nZoom in to enjoy an evening of information and discussion as we bring organic land and lawn care to New Canaan! \nDina Brewster is Executive Director of CT NOFA. A full-time farmer for fifteen years\, she was previously a teacher\, first in the Philippines as a Peace Corps volunteer and then in the Bronx teaching high school English. She founded and developed “The Hickories\,” initially a one-acre vegetable garden which has grown to a 45-acre certified organic fruit\, vegetable\, cut flower\, and livestock business. Committed to connecting people with working land\, Brewster chose to return to her family’s farm in Ridgefield and start a Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) program. She believes we have a responsibility to increase the economic vitality of our regional agrarian economy\, improve the long-range ecological stewardship of our land and water\, and enliven our cultural commitment to farming.

DESCRIPTION:Registration is now being accepted for this year’s Coastal Certificate Program\, titled “Pathways from Source to Sea — How Gardens Can Make the Connection.” It will take place in March at Connecticut College in New London. \nA series of four evening classes with a field trip\, students will learn about coastal environmental issues\, rethinking their lawns\, creating native plant habitats and designing with nature and Long Island Sound in mind. Led by Judy Preston\, Long Island Sound outreach coordinator for Connecticut Sea Grant\, the program will feature multiple guest speakers giving presentations about how home gardens can help connect and restore vital pathways used by countless wildlife species\, from the inlands to the Sound. Students do not have to be Master Gardeners to take the class. \nStudents of the program are encouraged to become ambassadors of alternatives to nutrient and chemically intensive landscaping practices for Connecticut coastal and watershed residents\, through an outreach component designed to spread the word through projects\, educational materials and other activities. \nThe classes will meet from 6 to 9 p.m. on March 9\, 11\, 23 and 25 in Room 101 of New London Hall at the college\, 270 Mohegan Ave. The class is limited to 35 students. \nThe program is sponsored by Connecticut Sea Grant\, the Long Island Sound Study\, the UConn Master Gardener Program and the UConn College of Agriculture\, Health and Natural Resources. This session will break down several of these components in an attempt to make searching for farmland more exciting and less stressful. Topics covered will include conducting a land search\, utilizing CT Farmlink\, affording farmland\, constructing a secure lease\, and exploring different methods of farmland tenure. We will start with introductions and a quick survey of the audience in order to help direct our conversation. \nWe will explore several tools and guides from Land For Good that may be helpful in your land access journey. These include our Build-A-Lease tool\, Farmland Access Methods Guide\, Acquiring Your Farm\, NYFC’s Finding Farmland Calculator and others. Attendees are welcome to bring their laptops to work and follow along\, and some physical copies of the resources mentioned above will be available. Though this workshop is primarily geared towards farm seekers\, landowners are welcome to attend in order to gain insights into crafting leases and understanding a farmer’s point of view. \n  \nTrainer: \nWill O’Meara is the Connecticut Field Agent for Land For Good\, a non-profit whose mission is “to ensure the future of farming in New England by putting more farmers more securely on more land.”  Will is also a Farm Manager at Waldingfield Farm. \nRSVP to Charlotte Ross\ncharlotte.ross@uconn.edu
