DESCRIPTION:Join NOFA MASS for a virtual tour of Red Shirt Farm in Lanesboro\, MA to learn from farm manager Jim Schultz and guest presenter Dan Kittredge of the Bionutrient Food Association to learn how their no-till farming practices are improving soil health and the nutritional density of their produce.  We will have video clips of Red Shirt Farm that show Jim discussing certain aspects of the farm\, including: BCS tillage reduction equipment set up and systems\,  Johnson-Su Bioreactor\, and permanent bed systems.  Jim will give a demonstration of his BCS-powered transferred mulch system\, including mower\, rake and mini-baler. This system is used to convert cover crops to mulch that can be used elsewhere on the farm. Dan will talk about the results of the Real Food Campaign work so far and how they are collecting data to link the value of healthy soils and nutritious food to overall human health. Dan will share his insight into how management practices affect nutrient density in crops. We will show how the Bionutrient Meter can be used in the field to assess the crops in real time.

This workshop is part of an NRCS Conservation Innovation Grant (CIG)\, a collaboration of NOFA/Mass\, NOFA-NJ\, and CT NOFA. Presented by Caro Roszell\, NOFA/Mass Education Director\, Soil Carbon Program Coordinator and CIG Project lead. \n  \nPart 1: September 30th Introduction to No Till at North Slope Farm\, Morganics Family Farm\, and Ironbound Cider Vegetable Farm in Lambertville\, Hillsborough Township\, and Asbury\, New Jersey \nMike Rassweiler will speak about his favorable furrows approach to reducing tillage and the results for his market vegetables. Scott Morgan will discuss his tillage reduction efforts on his family grain farm— what’s working well and what is posing particular challenges\, what equipment can be modified to avoid buying specialized no-till equipment\, and more. Finally\, Alec Gioseffi will speak about his efforts to establish an organic farm in a location that had not been cultivated in some time.  Video of the three farms will be followed by a roundtable discussion with all three farmers. She has just returned from the inaugural BOATanical Expedition- an 87 mile canoe journey down the Quinnitukqut (Connecticut) River- planting 500 native plants in pollinator gardens as she “paddled for the pollinators!” Sefra Alexandra is a WINGS WorldQuest Flag Carrier\, member of the Explorers Club + holds her M.A.T. in Agroecology from Cornell University.

In her late 20s\, gardening became her true passion\, and she hasn’t looked back. 2020 marks her twenty-first year in business as a designer\, hands-on gardener and horticulturalist. Her science background has been very helpful for the ecologically-based work she does. Gardens with healthy ecosystems will be much more viable as the world faces the effects of climate changes. One of Marie’s missions is to teach others that through our gardens and landscapes we can help offset some of the effects of these impacts through biodiversity and well thought out design.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout Jean Ponzi\nJean Ponzi serves as the Green Resources Manager at the Missouri Botanical Garden in St. Louis. A 25-year veteran of the Garden’s EarthWays Center team\, she currently applies her sustainability expertise as manager of the St. Louis Green Business Challenge\, operator of the Garden’s Green Resources Info Service\, and on the leadership team for the regional initiative BiodiverseCity St. Louis. Jean is in demand as a speaker\, writer and media spokesperson\, offering audiences ecological vision tempered with practical experience.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout Toni Bailey\nToni Bailey is the owner of Gracefully Green\, LLC\, a landscape consulting and design business in the Washington\, DC metropolitan area. Her work is focused exclusively on sustainable landscaping practices\, particularly conservation landscaping projects that are grant-funded. In her late 20s\, gardening became her true passion\, and she hasn’t looked back. 2020 marks her twenty-first year in business as a designer\, hands-on gardener and horticulturalist. Her science background has been very helpful for the ecologically-based work she does. Gardens with healthy ecosystems will be much more viable as the world faces the effects of climate changes. One of Marie’s missions is to teach others that through our gardens and landscapes we can help offset some of the effects of these impacts through biodiversity and well thought out design.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout Jean Ponzi\nJean Ponzi serves as the Green Resources Manager at the Missouri Botanical Garden in St. Louis. A 25-year veteran of the Garden’s EarthWays Center team\, she currently applies her sustainability expertise as manager of the St. Louis Green Business Challenge\, operator of the Garden’s Green Resources Info Service\, and on the leadership team for the regional initiative BiodiverseCity St. Louis. Jean is in demand as a speaker\, writer and media spokesperson\, offering audiences ecological vision tempered with practical experience.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout Toni Bailey\nToni Bailey is the owner of Gracefully Green\, LLC\, a landscape consulting and design business in the Washington\, DC metropolitan area. Her work is focused exclusively on sustainable landscaping practices\, particularly conservation landscaping projects that are grant-funded. A member of APLD since 2004\, she has served at the chapter and national leadership levels\, including four years as chair of the Sustainability Committee\, where she continues as a member. In 2017\, Toni was honored to be selected for APLD’s Award for Leadership in Landscape Sustainability.
