SUMMARY:Microscopy Training in Tyringham\, MA (Woven Roots Farm)
DESCRIPTION:Take control of your soil’s health! CT NOFA is excited to offer microscopy training at Woven Roots Farm in Tyringham\, MA\, this March. \n\nCourse Overview\nParticipants will view various soils and composts\, looking at the different soil structures and the microbes that thrive in healthy soil. Demonstrations include how to prepare a slide for viewing\, what you might find and how to evaluate your findings. Participants will be trained to analyze the following: \n\nBacteria : Fungi ratios – what they mean and why they’re important\nAggregate structure in soil/compost\nBacteria numbers and diversity\nQuality of fungi and what that means for your soil\nPredators – identify and quantify both aerobic and anaerobic microbes\nCompost tea and extracts – microbial populations that exist in real time\n\nThroughout the training we will discuss ways to create healthy\, living soil using regenerative agriculture techniques. At the completion of the training you will be ready to use your microscope to evaluate soil and compost\, with the ability to store the information in written and visual form\, to share\, and compare with future samples. \nTraining includes: \n\nOMAX Digital Compound Microscope\n3 Recorded Virtual Training Sessions (can be viewed at any time)\n1 In-Person training (select your location at registration)\n\n\nCourse Schedule\nThis course will be conducted over 3 pre-recorded virtual sessions (which can be viewed at any time)\, and 1 in-person training session. The three recorded virtual microscopy training sessions will be made available to all participants immediately\, for use at any time. This will be followed by an in-person session on Saturday\, March 15\, 10:00am-1:00pm\, at Woven Roots Farm in Tyringham\, MA. \nCLICK HERE TO REGISTER.\n\nTestimonials\nIn May of 2023\, the NOFA-NY education team had the great privilege to participate in soil microscopy training with Monique Bosch through CT-NOFA. The virtual training time let us get familiar with microscopes\, learn to identify aggregates\, fungal hyphae\, nematodes\, and some soil structure basics. The in-person training at Bard College was incredible! We found our own soil samples and analyzed them with students from the college\, allowing us to test our teaching skills and gain confidence. I highly recommend Monique and this program. I have been able to work with farmers and gardeners now to look at their soil structures and teach them about what they see. \nSamantha (NOFA-NY) \nAt Assawaga Farm\, our microscope is an indispensable tool for maintaining and improving our soil’s health. We use it to assess the biology of many things on the farm including potting soil\, compost\, teas\, as well as general soil tests from our fields\, and it allows us a better understanding of what the soil and crops need to be healthy\, productive\, and sustainable. Looking at our farm through a microscope opens up a whole new perspective that we use to inform our decisions. \nAlex Carpenter (Assawaga Farm\, Putnam\, CT)

SUMMARY:Forest Farming: Ecological and Legal Considerations for Connecticut
DESCRIPTION:Join us for this free workshop on working with rare\, high-value plants\, including ginseng and goldenseal. \n\n\nForest farming offers an exciting strategy for cultivating high-value herbs within a natural forest setting. However\, some of these herb species are very rare in our state. These rare species are protected by state law\, adding complications for growers. \nJoin us for a workshop covering important ecological and legal considerations for forest farming of native medicinal herbs in Connecticut. This workshop will focus on two of the highest-value\, rare native herbs: American ginseng and goldenseal. We will discuss the basics of forest farming and delve into the details of working with these sensitive species. This is a free\, 3-hour event including a classroom presentation followed by a field walk\, but we ask that attendees please reserve a spot by clicking here. \n\n\n\n\nThis event is part of CT NOFA’s Equipment Share Program and is FREE to attend thanks to funding from the Transition to Organic Partnership Program (TOPP).

SUMMARY:Soil Health 3-Ways - July Session
DESCRIPTION:Under the tutelage of CT NOFA Soil Health Program Manager\, Monique Bosch\, Soil Health 3-Ways participants will attend three virtual classes (via Zoom) that cover the three main properties of soil – physical\, chemical\, and biological – in the lead-up to an in-person\, practical application class. This 4-class course is intended for both commercial farmers and home gardeners to help them work with nature to produce healthy plants and nutrient-dense food. \nA single registration for this event includes access to all four classes in the course (descriptions\, dates\, and times detailed below). Zoom links for the virtual classes will be provided after registration. Attendance is limited to 22 participants. \nClass Details\nPhysical Properties (virtual) – July 9th\, 6:00pm-7:30pm\nYou will learn to interpret what type of soil and conditions you are working with\, using simple tools and methods. We will explore management practices for best structure\, texture\, and tilth. Understanding the physical properties of soil will help with many aspects of soil health that are often ignored. Rather than relying just on a chemical soil test\, physical testing will give us a better understanding of the actual make-up of our soils. This class will give you the ability to use simple tools to perform physical tests on soil to determine compaction\, soil texture\, structure and permeability. \nChemical Properties (virtual) – July 16th\, 6:00pm-7:30pm\nWe will learn how to interpret a chemical soil test\, analyzing macro and micro-nutrients\, pH\, Cation Exchange Capacity and Organic Matter content\, and how these values affect our soil’s ability to grow healthy plants and nutritious food. Using regenerative farming methods\, we will address issues of nutrient deficiency\, chemical imbalance\, and excesses. \nBiological Properties (virtual) – July 23rd\, 6:00pm-7:30pm\nWe will study the ‘Soil Food Web\,’ learning about the living organisms in our soil\, from the visible to the microscopic. Using a microscope\, we will zoom in to study the microbial communities that live in our soils and compost. With an understanding of the complex trophic structure of life in our soils\, we can determine aggregate structure\, fungal/bacterial ratios\, as well as nutrient cycling\, all influenced by our soil management practices\, as well as the chemical and physical make-up of our soils. \nPractical Application (In-Person @ The Hickories Farm) – July 25th\, 1:00pm-4:00pm\nThe course will conclude with an in-person\, practical application meeting at The Hickories Farm in Ridgefield\, CT\, putting to use many of the skills and topics we have covered in the previous virtual sessions. We will perform physical testing of soil\, including methods that you can apply to your own land or garden. To help determine the life in soil\, we will have microscopes on-hand to study various soil/compost samples. Together\, we will explore how we can work with nature to create healthy\, living soil. \nCost\nThis course is free for all participants thanks to grant funding through the Transition to Organic Partnership Program. \nClick here to register for this course
