SUMMARY:Winnow Wizard Seed Cleaning Workshop with Bill Braun
DESCRIPTION:Bill Braun is a farmer at Ivory Silo Farm in Westport\, MA\, growing organic vegetables\, herbs\, flowers\, fruit\, and seed. He is also the co-founder and executive director of Freed Seed Federation\, a farmer-run 501(c)3 nonprofit dedicated to place-based seed for the people. \nAt this workshop\, we will tour the 17 species of native plants in Founder Plots that are producing restoration seed for The Ecotype Project of CT NOFA. Learn how we are growing\, collecting\, and cleaning restoration seed to supply our ecoregion of the Northeast with the right plants in the right place. \nTogether\, Bill will show us how the Winnow Wizard works- a brilliant seed cleaning instrument open to members of CT NOFA for cleaning all types of seed. \nLearn how to process your seed crops as we demonstrate how to utilize this equipment for on-farm seed saving. \nPlease pre-register as spaces are limited. \n

SUMMARY:Lunchtime Microscope Series: Healthy Soil Under the Microscope
DESCRIPTION:Join us at noon on Wednesdays in April\, as we zoom in on ‘Microbes Having Lunch’\, under the microscope. \nWeek 1 (April 7): Learn about the diversity of organisms that make up the ‘soil food web’. From the tiniest one-celled bacteria\, algae\, fungi\, and protozoa\, to the more complex nematodes and micro-arthropods. \nWeek 2 (April 14): Learn how to keep microbes in your soil ‘alive and well’. In return\, these soil organisms will provide nutrients for the plants\, build organic matter\, aggregate soil particles together\, and help plants resist ‘stress’. \nWeek 3 (April 21): Learn how to make healthy\, living compost\, compost tea\, and extractions\, then how to use a microscope to identify the microbes\, and quality. \n  \nHealthy Living Soil Grows Healthy Nutritious Food.

SUMMARY:Road to Organic Certification
DESCRIPTION:Three Wednesdays starting February 24th.\nWorkshop dates: February 24\, March 3\, March 10th\nFree \n  \n \n  \nAre you a farmer who wants to obtain organic certification? \nAre you thinking of starting a farm and wondering if organic certification makes sense for you? \nThis multi-course workshop will guide you through the organic crop and livestock certification process. \nWe’ll start with an overview of the certification process including a description of what’s allowed\, prohibited and restricted under the organic standards.  Next we’ll cover how to find a certifying agent and work with them to complete your organic system plan.  Finally\, we’ll walk through the on-farm organic inspection and your ongoing responsibilities as a certified organic farmer. \nThis workshop will provide you all the tools you need to have your farm certified organic. \nSession 1 – February 24th\, 2021 \nWe will delve into a short history of organic farming and its history as an agricultural movement and how it came to be expressed in the process of certification\, whose purpose and components will be explored. We will discuss the applicability of the Federal Regulations including what has to be certified\, record keeping requirements and allowed and prohibited substances and methods. \nSession 2 – March 3rd\, 2021 \nWe will cover production and record-keeping requirements and provide you with resources to develop an “Organic System Plan”\, a written record of how you will manage your farm.  Key components include soil and crop management and protecting the organic integrity of your farm and products. We expect to be joined by several certified organic farmers who will tell their stories and answer your questions. \nSession 3 – March 10th\, 2021 \nOur discussion will continue by covering the management of greenhouses and buffers. We’ll delve into record-keeping options and the certification process including farm management during the transition process. A guest from a regional certification agency will join our discussion and answer questions. \n  \nAbout the speaker:\n \nAl Johnson farmed & market gardened organically for 12 years and has been an organic inspector for the past 32 years.  The original organic certification standards for NOFA-NJ were written around his kitchen table. He is currently the VP of NOFA-NJ and Co-President of the 7-chapter NOFA Interstate Council. He has taught farming and gardening workshops throughout the northeast for many years.

A full-time farmer for fifteen years\, she was previously a teacher\, first in the Philippines as a Peace Corps volunteer and then in the Bronx teaching high school English. She founded and developed “The Hickories\,” initially a one-acre vegetable garden which has grown to a 45-acre certified organic fruit\, vegetable\, cut flower\, and livestock business. Committed to connecting people with working land\, Brewster chose to return to her family’s farm in Ridgefield and start a Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) program. She believes we have a responsibility to increase the economic vitality of our regional agrarian economy\, improve the long-range ecological stewardship of our land and water\, and enliven our cultural commitment to farming.
