SUMMARY:Special Event: Guest Speaker Mark Bittman in Conversation with Tessa Lowinske Desmond
DESCRIPTION:The Northeast Organic Farming Association of NJ and Labyrinth Books are pleased to announce that we are hosting a virtual conversation with Mr. Mark Bittman and Dr. Tessa Lowinske Desmond about his new book\, Animal\, Vegetable\, Junk. The date is Sunday\, May 16 at 7:30 pm. We are excited and hope that Mr. Bittman and Dr. Desmond will have a lovely conversation that will be informative and engaging for all in the NOFA-NJ and Princeton Community. The event is free and online\, but donations are greatly appreciated; this will be the beginning of NOFA-NJ’s 35th Anniversary Endowment fundraising campaign. Please register on NOFANJ.org for the link. \nThe event is free\, but donations are greatly appreciated. \n \n\nAbout the Author: Mark Bittman is a bestselling cookbook author\, journalist\, and television personality. He has been a leading voice in global food culture and policy for more than three decades. Born in New York City in 1950\, Bittman began writing professionally in 1978. After five years as a general assignment reporter\, he turned all of his attention to food. His friendly\, informal approach to home cooking has shown millions that fancy execution is no substitute for flavor and soul. Although Mark Bittman never formally trained as a chef\, his pursuits as a curious and tenacious foodie have made him a casual culinary master. His weekly New York Times food column\, The Minimalist\, meshes accessible and inexpensive ingredients with “anyone-can” cooking techniques to produce exceedingly delicious dishes. Bittman’s funny\, friendly attitude and trademark informal approach to food-craft extend to his blockbuster TV programs (which retain delays and mishaps that other producers would edit out)\, The Bittman Project\, and ambitious cookbooks\, like How to Cook Everything and The Best Recipes in the World. \nAbout the Host: Dr. Desmond is an Associate Research Scholar at Princeton University and is on the board of NOFA-NJ. She earned her Ph.D. in literary studies (2014) and master’s degree in Afro-American studies (2005) from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. She arrived at Princeton in 2017 having most recently served as administrative director and lecturer for the Committee on Ethnicity\, Migration\, Rights at Harvard University where she helped to develop academic pathways\, curriculum\, and event series in ethnic studies. Her current research focuses on the history of farming in 20th-century America\, and on migrant farm labor. She teaches courses on the American food system and on multi-ethnic American literature. As an extension of her intellectual interests\, Lowinske Desmond owns a six-acre farm near Princeton and is active in the local food movement. She has received awards for publicly engaged scholarship and outstanding service to students. She was also awarded the K. Patricia Cross Future Leaders in Higher Education award\, given by the American Association of Colleges and Universities to recognize scholars committed to academic and civic responsibility. \nLabyrinth is an acclaimed independent bookstore serving the students and faculty of Princeton University as well as the town of Princeton and beyond. As the official bookstore for Princeton University\, the independent store specializes in academic books for scholars\, and can always be relied upon to provide those books that form the backbone of current debates both inside and outside of the universities. Labyrinth also carries books of broad and general interest: contemporary and classic literature\, poetry\, current events\, history\, philosophy\, theology\, cookbooks\, comics\, and books for children. They offer a large selection of constantly-changing inventory\, daily sales and deep discounts on most books\, used and antiquarian titles\, as well as gifts for readers and writers\, art supplies and stationery. Labyrinth Books is owned by Cliff Simms\, Peter Simms and Dorothea von Moltke.
