SUMMARY:"Common Ground" Showing\, Featuring CT NOFA Panelists
DESCRIPTION:On November 17\, the Fairfield Theater Company will be hosting a free screening of Common Ground. \n \nCommon Ground is the highly anticipated sequel to the juggernaut success documentary\, Kiss the Ground\, which touched over 1 billion people globally and inspired the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) to put $20 billion toward soil health. By fusing journalistic expose’ with deeply personal stories from those on the front lines of the food movement\, Common Ground unveils a dark web of money\, power\, and politics behind our broken food system. The film reveals how unjust practices forged our current farm system in which farmers of all colors are literally dying to feed us. The film profiles a hopeful and uplifting movement of white\, black\, and indigenous farmers who are using alternative “regenerative” models of agriculture that could balance the climate\, save our health\, and stabilize America’s economy – before it’s too late. \nExpert panelists from CT NOFA will be in attendance for a post-screening Q&A. \n\nMichael Nadeau | CT NOFA Organic Land Care Program Co-Founder & Wildflower Meadow Specialist\nDr. Kim Stoner | Emeritus Scientist\, Department of Entomology at the CT Agricultural Experiment Station and CT NOFA Director of Policy and Advocacy\nMonique Bosch | CT NOFA Soil Health Program Manager; Soil Health Educator at Brooklyn Botanic Garden and Berkshire Botanical Gardens\n\nDoors open at 4:00pm and screening begins at 4:30pm. \nClick here to learn more and reserve your free tickets.

SUMMARY:Environmental Rights and Environmental Justice - A Discussion with Maya K. van Rossum
DESCRIPTION:Maya K. van Rossum\, author of The Green Amendment\, The People’s Fight For a Clean\, Safe & Healthy Environment will be touring Connecticut to talk about her new book\, the Green Amendment movement\, and how Connecticut can benefit from securing a constitutional right to clean and healthy air\, water\, and soil; a stable climate; and health ecosystems as part of its state constitution. \nJoin van Rossum and other CT Advocates for Environmental Justice on April 19 from 6:00pm to 8:30pm at the United Church on the Green in New Haven for a discussion of matters related to our fight for a Green Amendment in Connecticut. \nEvent schedule: \n\n\n\n6:00pm – Networking and Conversation\, vegan food provided\n7:00pm – Keynote by Maya van Rossum\n7:30pm – Panel of Environmental Justice Activists and Q&A\n\n\n\nSpanish interpretation available. Free and open to the public. REGISTER HERE. \nThanks to the Greater New Haven Green Fund for a grant to CT NOFA and a generous donor to C3M for supporting this event! \nInterested in learning more about the effort to pass a Green Amendment in Connecticut? Read more here\, and join CT NOFA’s mailing list to receive updates on our advocacy efforts\, as well as action items you can take to help us create a more equitable and organic Connecticut. \n\nvan Rossum is a veteran environmentalist on a mission to use our state and federal constitutions to empower activists and provide hope to communities everywhere seeking to address environmental racism\, the climate crisis\, and the ongoing ravages of polluted water and air\, toxic contamination\, and withering ecosystems nationwide. She is the founder of Green Amendments For The Generations\, a national nonprofit organization dedicated to inspiring passage of Green Amendments in every state across the U.S. that would recognize and protect environmental rights on par with other inalienable civic and political freedoms such as speech and property.  \nIn 2023\, Connecticut joined over a dozen states that have active Green Amendment efforts underway. The CT Environmental Rights Amendment was introduced in the General Assembly and had a public hearing in the Environment Committee. Although the CT Environmental Rights Amendment gained support from over 30 environmental\, civic\, and religious organizations\, it was not brought up for a vote by the committee. The CT Environmental Rights Amendment Alliance will continue efforts to broaden and extend community support. Learn more at the Linktree for the Connecticut Environmental Rights Amendment.  \nFor every book purchased through Possible Futures\, 10% will be donated to the CPEN\, the Community Place-making and Engagement Network (http://www.cpeninc.com/). Books can be purchased at the New Haven events or through bit.ly/thegreenamendment. \nAbout The Green Amendment Second Edition \nWe have reached a critical tipping point in our fight for the environment: Corporations profit off climate change\, natural disasters devastate homes\, BIPOC communities continue to suffer disproportionately from pollution\, and the most vulnerable suffer the health effects of pollution. Yet our laws are designed to accommodate this destruction rather than prevent it. Without government support\, it’s no wonder people feel powerless. \nFortunately\, there is a solution. With The Green Amendment (Disruption Books\, November 1\, 2022\, Second Edition)\, Maya K. van Rossum lays the groundwork for an inspirational new agenda promoting environmental constitutionalism—one that will finally empower people\, level the playing field\, and provide real hope for communities everywhere.  \nFeaturing forewords by Mark Ruffalo and Kerri Evelyn Harris\, this updated edition of her trailblazing 2017 book invites readers to join the growing movement where our state and federal constitutions make a clean\, safe\, and healthy environment an enforceable right. Through compelling interviews with activists on the ground\, clear evidence from experts\, and heartbreaking stories from those hit hardest by environmental ruin\, The Green Amendment demonstrates how our current U.S. system of environmental protection is failing communities; but then lights a transformational path forward using our constitutions. Under Maya’s leadership\, the future of constitutional environmentalism is a bright one. In this second edition\, she also turns her attention to the often-neglected issues of environmental racism\, the climate crisis\, the human health devastation caused by environmental degradation\, and the importance of protecting future generations from pollution and environmental harm. \nThe Green Amendment seeks to revolutionize the United States system of environmental laws and governance by transforming environmental protection from an unfulfilled promise driven by politics and industry to a constitutionally enforceable RIGHT of the people.

SUMMARY:A Guide to Restoring the Little Things that Run the World
DESCRIPTION:Insect populations have declined 45% globally since 1974. The most alarming part of this statistic is that we don’t seem to care\, despite the fact that a world without insects is a world without humans! So how do we build beautiful landscapes that support the pollinators\, herbivores\, detritivores\, predators and parasitoids that run the ecosystems we depend on? Doug Tallamy will remind us of the many essential roles insects play\, and describe the simple changes we must make in our landscapes and our attitudes to keep insects on the ground\, in the air and yes\, on our plants. \nCT Hort is delighted to be hosting Doug as the final guest of their 2018-19 Season. He is recognized as one of our nation’s leading entomologists and wildlife ecologists. This outstanding lecture is made possible due to the generous funding from the Lois and Herb Isaacson endowment. \nDoug Tallamy is a professor in the Department of Entomology and Wildlife Ecology at the University of Delaware\, where he has authored 90 research publications and has taught for 37 years. Chief among his research goals is to better understand the many ways insects interact with plants and how such interactions determine the diversity of animal communities. His book Bringing Nature Home: How Native Plants Sustain Wildlife in Our Gardens was published by Timber Press in 2007 and was awarded the 2008 Silver Medal by the Garden Writers’ Association. The Living Landscape\, co-authored with Rick Darke\, was published in 2014. Doug is also a regular columnist for Garden Design\, now e-published at gardendesign.com. \nTime & location:  CT Hort meets at Emanuel Synagogue Auditorium\, 160 Mohegan Drive\, West Hartford. A drop-in fee of $10 is collected at the door from non-members. Our speaker starts at 7:30 p.m. but come early – by 7:00 p.m. – to socialize\, participate in the raffle\, see travel fliers and ask plant questions.ConnConneCcCCOnnecConC
