SUMMARY:Farmland Access
DESCRIPTION:Farmland Access\n\n\nTraining Objective: \nFarmland access is often cited as a major barrier to new and beginning farmers\, and the multitude of components that make up farmland access can cause farmers to stop in their tracks. This session will break down several of these components in an attempt to make searching for farmland more exciting and less stressful. Topics covered will include conducting a land search\, utilizing CT Farmlink\, affording farmland\, constructing a secure lease\, and exploring different methods of farmland tenure. We will start with introductions and a quick survey of the audience in order to help direct our conversation. \nWe will explore several tools and guides from Land For Good that may be helpful in your land access journey. These include our Build-A-Lease tool\, Farmland Access Methods Guide\, Acquiring Your Farm\, NYFC’s Finding Farmland Calculator and others. Attendees are welcome to bring their laptops to work and follow along\, and some physical copies of the resources mentioned above will be available. Though this workshop is primarily geared towards farm seekers\, landowners are welcome to attend in order to gain insights into crafting leases and understanding a farmer’s point of view. \n  \nTrainer: \nWill O’Meara is the Connecticut Field Agent for Land For Good\, a non-profit whose mission is “to ensure the future of farming in New England by putting more farmers more securely on more land.”  Will is also a Farm Manager at Waldingfield Farm. \nRSVP to Charlotte Ross\ncharlotte.ross@uconn.edu

SUMMARY:Market Access and Food Safety: The potential for Farm to School to scale up your business
DESCRIPTION:Market Access & Food Safety: Farm to School\n\n\nTrainers:\nIndu Upadhyaya is the Food Safety Extension Educator with UConn Extension.  She completed her PhD from UConn in Animal Science with a focus on Food safety and Microbiology. Before coming back to UConn as faculty\, she worked in collaboration with the USDA Agricultural Research Service Poultry Production and Product Safety Research Unit as a postdoctoral associate at the University of Arkansas Center of Excellence for Poultry Science. She also worked as an Assistant Professor in the School of Agriculture at Tennessee Tech University\, and was involved with developing a research program on poultry and fresh produce safety. \n______________ \nWith a degree in Geography and Natural Resource Management\, Shannon Raider-Ginsberg has run and developed farming and agricultural education programs. As a farmer\, she has worked all manner of farms from 20-acre certified organic CSAs to 450 acre Christmas tree farms\, to community gardens\, urban farms and her own vegetable operation. Shannon is currently the Farmer Liaison at Put Local on Your Tray working to dispel the myths preventing farmers and schools from engaging in meaningful procurement relationships. \n  \nTraining Objective: \nIf you are ready to grow your business and have struggled to increase your CSA and/or Farmers market sales\, come and learn how selling to schools can open up market access to small scale wholesale. Food safety is key to making trusting relationships with all customers. It is not a roadblock\, and navigating food safety with schools is not as complicated as you might think. Come learn how to navigate these two systems\, schools and food safety\, and see if farm to school could be a good fit for your business. \nRSVP to Charlotte Ross\ncharlotte.ross@uconn.edu

SUMMARY:Review of Top 10 Issues on Veg Farms in 2019: Pests\, Disease\, Soils\, Climate Change\, Oh My!
DESCRIPTION:Training Objective: \nMatt DeBacco and Kip Kolesinskas have spent years monitoring disease and pests through IPM and evaluating soil conditions (respectively) on Connecticut farms. This training will include side-by-side presentations by each of them on the Top 10 Issues they have seen on vegetable farms.  We will also discuss the overlap of the problems identified\, many of which are associated with Climate Change\,  and identify possible solutions to make farming in our state a more productive and resilient endeavor. \n\n  \nTrainers: \nMatthew DeBacco is a three-time UConn graduate\, receiving his Bachelor of Science primary major in Pathobiology and a secondary major in Horticulture along with a minor in Molecular and Cellular Biology.  He continued on to earn a Master’s degree in Education and a Masters in Agronomy studying organic suppression of powdery mildew in cucurbits and analysis of the degradation of fiber pots in a field plot setting.  He has worked with farmers across the state as a Nutrient Management on Farm Planner where he helped growers allocate nutrients in a cost-effective manner.  He also has provided one-on-one consulting along with diagnosing field problems while offering guidance for growers and providing reports for grower alerts.  In addition to this\, he has taught college and high school level science classes.  As a hobby\, he enjoys growing giant pumpkins and has held the Connecticut state record twice with his largest being 1\,766.5 pounds.  \nKip Kolesinskas serves as the Land Use and Conservation Specialist for UConn Extension’s  Solid Ground Farmer TrainingProgram. He has worked with Connecticut’s farmers\, landowners\, state agencies\, municipalities\, and non-profits for the past 31 years. Working as a field soil scientist for the USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) Kip was responsible for completing the state-wide update and digital release of the Soil Survey of Connecticut. He has intimate knowledge of all the soil landscapes in Connecticut and their limitations and potential for agriculture and agricultural infrastructure. As a Resource Soil Scientist he worked with teams of conservationists\, agronomists\, ecologists\, and engineers to develop conservation plans for farms and evaluate\, design\, and install conservation practices. With his 35 years of government experience he has extensive knowledge on how to navigate and apply for federal and state programs that can benefit farmers\, as well as the regulatory issues such as inland wetlands and water quality. He managed the USDA NRCS Farm and Ranch Lands Protection Program and has worked extensively with state agencies\, municipalities\, and land trusts on farmland protection. Kip has been a major contributor to statewide efforts to increase farmer access to land\, develop farm friendly municipalities\, and promote locally grown and produced food. Kip speaks and teaches extensively statewide and nationally on soil quality\, soils and land-use planning\, wetlands\, farmland protection\, and the rental and leasing of farmland. \nRSVP to Charlotte Ross\ncharlotte.ross@uconn.edu
