SUMMARY:Organic Pest and Disease Management
DESCRIPTION:This event is part of CT NOFA’s Skill Share program\, produced in partnership with UConn Extension’s Solid Ground program. \nJoin Shuresh Ghimire\, UConn Extension IPM educator at Lathrop Farmstead as we explore the different pests and diseases vegetable farmers can face in a season and how to manage them in a organic way. This 3-hour event will provide a hands on opportunity to see what are the sorts of things we are facing this time of year\, but also how earlier pests and diseases have been managed. Being certified organic always makes it more important to understand the firm boundaries of what you can and can’t do\, so if you are interested in transitioning your farm to organic\, or are in the early stages of your certified organic farm\, this would be a great skill share to attend. \nThis field day is free to attend. Register here.

SUMMARY:Environmental Rights and Environmental Justice - A Discussion with Maya K. van Rossum
DESCRIPTION:Maya K. van Rossum\, author of The Green Amendment\, The People’s Fight For a Clean\, Safe & Healthy Environment will be touring Connecticut to talk about her new book\, the Green Amendment movement\, and how Connecticut can benefit from securing a constitutional right to clean and healthy air\, water\, and soil; a stable climate; and health ecosystems as part of its state constitution. \nJoin van Rossum and other CT Advocates for Environmental Justice on April 19 from 6:00pm to 8:30pm at the United Church on the Green in New Haven for a discussion of matters related to our fight for a Green Amendment in Connecticut. \nEvent schedule: \n\n\n\n6:00pm – Networking and Conversation\, vegan food provided\n7:00pm – Keynote by Maya van Rossum\n7:30pm – Panel of Environmental Justice Activists and Q&A\n\n\n\nSpanish interpretation available. Free and open to the public. REGISTER HERE. \nThanks to the Greater New Haven Green Fund for a grant to CT NOFA and a generous donor to C3M for supporting this event! \nInterested in learning more about the effort to pass a Green Amendment in Connecticut? Read more here\, and join CT NOFA’s mailing list to receive updates on our advocacy efforts\, as well as action items you can take to help us create a more equitable and organic Connecticut. \n\nvan Rossum is a veteran environmentalist on a mission to use our state and federal constitutions to empower activists and provide hope to communities everywhere seeking to address environmental racism\, the climate crisis\, and the ongoing ravages of polluted water and air\, toxic contamination\, and withering ecosystems nationwide. She is the founder of Green Amendments For The Generations\, a national nonprofit organization dedicated to inspiring passage of Green Amendments in every state across the U.S. that would recognize and protect environmental rights on par with other inalienable civic and political freedoms such as speech and property.  \nIn 2023\, Connecticut joined over a dozen states that have active Green Amendment efforts underway. The CT Environmental Rights Amendment was introduced in the General Assembly and had a public hearing in the Environment Committee. Although the CT Environmental Rights Amendment gained support from over 30 environmental\, civic\, and religious organizations\, it was not brought up for a vote by the committee. The CT Environmental Rights Amendment Alliance will continue efforts to broaden and extend community support. Learn more at the Linktree for the Connecticut Environmental Rights Amendment.  \nFor every book purchased through Possible Futures\, 10% will be donated to the CPEN\, the Community Place-making and Engagement Network (http://www.cpeninc.com/). Books can be purchased at the New Haven events or through bit.ly/thegreenamendment. \nAbout The Green Amendment Second Edition \nWe have reached a critical tipping point in our fight for the environment: Corporations profit off climate change\, natural disasters devastate homes\, BIPOC communities continue to suffer disproportionately from pollution\, and the most vulnerable suffer the health effects of pollution. Yet our laws are designed to accommodate this destruction rather than prevent it. Without government support\, it’s no wonder people feel powerless. \nFortunately\, there is a solution. With The Green Amendment (Disruption Books\, November 1\, 2022\, Second Edition)\, Maya K. van Rossum lays the groundwork for an inspirational new agenda promoting environmental constitutionalism—one that will finally empower people\, level the playing field\, and provide real hope for communities everywhere.  \nFeaturing forewords by Mark Ruffalo and Kerri Evelyn Harris\, this updated edition of her trailblazing 2017 book invites readers to join the growing movement where our state and federal constitutions make a clean\, safe\, and healthy environment an enforceable right. Through compelling interviews with activists on the ground\, clear evidence from experts\, and heartbreaking stories from those hit hardest by environmental ruin\, The Green Amendment demonstrates how our current U.S. system of environmental protection is failing communities; but then lights a transformational path forward using our constitutions. Under Maya’s leadership\, the future of constitutional environmentalism is a bright one. In this second edition\, she also turns her attention to the often-neglected issues of environmental racism\, the climate crisis\, the human health devastation caused by environmental degradation\, and the importance of protecting future generations from pollution and environmental harm. \nThe Green Amendment seeks to revolutionize the United States system of environmental laws and governance by transforming environmental protection from an unfulfilled promise driven by politics and industry to a constitutionally enforceable RIGHT of the people.

SUMMARY:Propagating & Sowing New England Meadow Plants
DESCRIPTION:New England meadow plants include a wide array of genera and are wonderful succession plants for many landscapes—dry open fields or damp\, shady woodland clearings\, large garden borders or converted lawn spaces. In Partnership with CT NOFA\, this hands-on workshop welcomes all horticulture professionals\, whether nursery growers\, gardeners\, or landscape designers\, to come learn about the considerations and processes of propagating\, sowing\, and growing native herbaceous species. Instructors Leo Kenney from Norcross Wildlife Sanctuary and Emily Baisden from Wild Seed Project will discuss seed preservation\, methods for strong and timely germination\, and growing materials. Students will leave confident in the knowledge that they can incorporate these species into their businesses operations. \nThis event is in-person only. \nPURCHASE TICKETS \nLeo Kenney is an ecologist and horticulturist currently based at Norcross Wildlife Foundation. There they work to enhance and supplement native plant communities and improve wildlife habitat using a wide array of applied ecology techniques\, including seed collection\, propagation from wild seed\, restoration planting\, and invasive species management. \nEmily Baisden works as the Seed Propagation Manager for Wild Seed Project. Prior to that\, Emily served as Entomologist and Educator at Coastal Maine Botanical Gardens. She has an extensive background in native horticulture and environmental education and focuses largely on using native plants to support food webs and biodiversity. She holds a BS in environmental science from the University of New England and an MS in entomology from the University of Delaware.

SUMMARY:Farming for Flavor: A tasting night with Julia Sweet & Bill Braun at the Gilded Tomato
DESCRIPTION:  \nBill Braun from the Freed Seed Federation will join us to discuss vegetable variety selection and the importance of growers selecting\, saving\, and breeding crops that are better adapted to their locations than what is available commercially.  Bill has championed local MA/RI varieties like the Macomber turnip and local corn varieties like the Rhode Island White Cap Flint corn as well as\, of course\, some exquisite new tomato varieties just ready for taste testing! \nBill Braun\, farmer at Ivory Silo Farm in Westport and executive director of Freed Seed Federation\, will discuss the crucial role of growers in the preservation\, improvement\, and breeding of regional seed varieties. He will bring some samples to taste tomato selections from a farmer/breeder participatory breeding project. Freed Seed Federation is a farmer-run nonprofit dedicated to place-based seed for the people. We partner farmers and breeders in the meaningful preservation\, creation\, and diversification of regional public domain seed\, in an effort to foster mosaics of alternative community-based seed systems.

SUMMARY:Why Organic Now? Linking Social Justice to Personal and Planetary Health A Virtual Panel Discussion
DESCRIPTION:NOFA-NH is proud to present “Why Organic Now? Linking Social Justice to Personal and Planetary Health\,” a FREE virtual panel discussion followed by a live Q & A. \n \nHumanity’s connection to one another and the planet is deeply rooted in agriculture. Spanning thousands of years across countless generations\, farming is a pillar of society\, just as food is an essential element of daily life. NOFA-NH believes that everyone has a right to nutritious\, local\, and culturally appropriate food. NOFA-NH also believes that those who tend to our food – farmers and farm workers – have a fundamental right to fair labor\, fair wages\, safe working conditions\, and access to resources that will enable them to feed their communities. While holding these beliefs\, we’re equally aware of the many challenges currently facing our food system\, including the troubling persistence of food insecurity\, injustice\, and the environmental crisis affecting our state and nation. \n\nThese challenges have highlighted the importance of organic growing and eating as practical steps for countering unfair labor practices\, unhealthy and inaccessible food supplies\, and climate change. People in New Hampshire and the Northeast are working together to build an equitable food system that strives to improve economic vitality\, resilience\, biodiversity\, and health for all. \n\nWe invite you to join us in a virtual discussion with leaders from around the state and region to explore specific ways that localized\, organic\, regenerative growing and eating can contribute to the repair of unjust social structures\, personal health\, and the environment that sustains us.

SUMMARY:Management Intensive Grazing at Cricket Creek Dairy
DESCRIPTION:Cricket Creek Farm is a small grass-based cow dairy producing a variety of products including raw-milk\, grass-fed meat and seven varieties of artisanal farmstead cheeses.  They use high density groups of cows rotated through temporary paddocks within their pastures\, allowing for the most efficient use of available forage and maximizing the benefit to livestock and soil. \nTopher Sabot\, Owner and Manager\, will lead our tour of the farm to: \n\nLearn about how they use a combination of high-tech and low-tech fencing to to manage the cows\, looking to maximize efficiency\nDiscuss grazing density and practices that provide superior nourishment for the animals while building nutrient rich and microbially diverse soil.\nSee their dairy facilities and barns\nHave a conversation about the fine points of producing dairy on a primarily grass-fed system.\n\nLocated in the beautiful Berkshire foothills of Western Massachusetts\, Cricket Creek Farm milks between 30-40 grass-fed cows throughout the year. Their mixed herd (primarily Jersey and Brown Swiss) is rotationally grazed on 200 acres of pasture during the summer\, and fed primarily farm produced hay and baleage in the winter. They also raise a few grass-fed beef cattle and whey-fed pigs. Their mission is to produce nourishing food that honors the animals\, respects the land\, feeds the community\, and exemplifies a sustainable model for small-farm viability.
