SUMMARY:Spray Safe\, Spray Well/Rocía Con Cuidado\, Rocía Bien
DESCRIPTION:Join Cornell Cooperative Extension for this free eight-part\, bilingual\, winter workshop series focused on the basics of when and how to use OMRI-listed pesticides on your vegetables farm. Participants in Eastern NY Commercial Horticulture will also have the opportunity to receive individual on-farm follow-up support from the project team in the spring and summer of 2022. \nBeginning and organic farmers are often disinterested in discussing pesticide use on the farm. However\, investing time in improving your spray programs and equipment can help you to spray more safely\, more effectively\, and less often.

SUMMARY:Breeding Carrots for Production\, Resilience\, Flavor\, and Fun in Organic Systems
DESCRIPTION:In this presentation\, you’ll learn fundamental concepts and strategies that are key to successful carrot breeding work. The presenters will cover basic genetics\, color expression\, trait expression and selection\, and demonstrate how to cut\, evaluate\, and select roots from a diverse array of orange and rainbow colored roots. Specific topics that will be addressed: \n\nWhich traits are straightforward to select for and which are not (more complex)\nStrategies to tease out environmental effects from genetic expression\nBasic color genetics – which colors are dominant and “easy to fix and work with” and which are more challenging\nWhen to stop – traits that are very difficult or “impossible” to select out or away from\nA word about male sterility – how it works in carrots (it’s naturally occurring) and what to do if\, or when\, it shows up\nRoot evaluation\, selection\, and storage
