Assistant Manager, Judea Garden

Duties / Responsibilities

Position Description:

The Assistant Manager is a part-time (20-24 hours/week), seasonal (April-November) position that supports the Manager in garden administration, volunteer and intern activities, growing and distribution of produce, community outreach programs, and daily operations. In 2026, the position may become full-time and include management and operations of a small greenhouse and packing/distribution center.

Essential Duties:

  • Assist in development and execution of plans for productive vegetable gardens including cultivation, transplant production, acquisition of seeds, transplants, water and soil management programs, composting program, fertilizing and pest/disease programs, maintenance, harvesting and handling product.
  • Assist in recruitment, coordination, and supervision of garden volunteers and summer interns
  • Facilities improvement, including greenhouse and distribution center operations (fencing, irrigation, etc.)
  • Maintain and grow the garden with volunteer assistance using organic and sustainable principles.
  • Participate in professional development opportunities as they arise (webinars, etc.)
  • Coordinate distribution of produce to local food pantries by volunteers, through food rescue groups, and at Judea Garden.
  • Assist in organizing Harvest to Home program with volunteers, local restaurants, and food pantries.
  • Maintain ongoing relationships and dialogue with towns and organizations regarding distribution needs.
  • Maintain a leadership role ensuring fresh produce is provided to those who need it.
  • Work with office staff to create and distribute news, events, etc.
  • Assist in creating and coordinating garden events, such as Open Garden Day, Weed & Wine, Spring & Fall Clean Ups, Planting Days and other events.
  • Work with the Development Director and Executive Director on fundraising opportunities
  • Establish weekly office hours
  • Participate in staff and other related meetings

Desired Applicant Experience

Qualifications

  • 2–4 years of hands-on experience organically growing vegetables, herbs, and flowers
  • A degree/certification in agriculture or related or a commensurate number of years of experience (preferred).
  • Strong organizational skills for keeping complete garden records
  • Excellent interpersonal and written / oral communication skills for working with volunteers, interns, and local organizations.
  • Ability to work occasional evenings and weekends for special events.
  • Commitment to Judea Garden’s mission of feeding those in need and being a model to end food insecurity
  • Commitment to Steep Rock’s mission, land conservation, and outdoor recreation

Compensation: $23-27 per hour. No benefits available at this time
Opportunity: We anticipate this position to replace the full-time Judea Garden Manager and Head Gardener in 2026, whereby staff benefits will be available.
