Here in one place is everything you need to know about sourcing local food in Connecticut and keeping our farms and our families healthy!

In Connecticut Healthy Food is available everywhere. Did you know that Connecticut has over 3,800 crop farms and 1,500 livestock farms producing virtually all the types of foods it's recommended we eat? And every year more Connecticut Grown food is available every season of the year. Connecticut Grown foods can be found right at the farms, in retail stores and at farmers markets. They include fruit, vegetables, meat, fish, eggs and dairy. We can pay with dollars or we can pay with SNAP or FMNP benefits. In Connecticut we have Healthy Farms, Healthy Food, and we can have Healthy People!

Who recommends what we eat and why?  No matter who is talking to us, author Michael Pollan or the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA), or in articles we read about cancer, diabetes, heart disease, obesity, the information all sounds the same! We should eat from every food group, in certain proportions, and often less than we think we need to eat.

 

What we eat directly effects our health:"The CDC has designated ...improvements in nutrition and physical activity, as“Winnable Battles” in efforts to improve the health of Americans and reduce the prevalence and severity of chronic diseases. Spring

lettuceSpring is finally here and and gardens and farmers markets will have available peas, all kinds of cool-weather greens from colorful lettuces to chards, kale, nettles and more. Early fruits like rhubard and strawberries will soon be available, so try new ways to incorporate them into your meals.

Resources for purchasing food products from your local Connecticut Farms:

    • Meat Producers in Connecticut-Local livestock farms offer residents of Connecticut an opportunity to purchase locally raised beef, bison, veal, lamb, goat, chicken, turkey, and fresh eggs.  Click HERE for the CT Department of Agriculture's list of meat producers in the state.

 

  • Pick-Your-Own Farms in Connecticut-Picking your own fruit at local farms is a great way to exercise while learning more about how your food is grown. Click HERE for the CT Department of Agriculture’s list of “Pick Your Own Farms” around the state.

 

 

 

  • Know Your Farmer, Know Your Food- USDA has responded to the growing interest in local and regional foods through the Know Your Farmer, Know Your Food initiative (KYF2). Their mission is to support the critical connection between farmers and consumers and to strengthen USDA's support for local and regional food systems.

 

  • guide2015-2016 CT NOFA Farm & Food Guide-Lists all of CT NOFA's Member Farms, food stores, and other businesses. Find information on what they sell, where they sell, farmers markets, CSAs, etc.

 

  • buyCTgrown-buyCTgrown is a place to connect people who are ready to discover CT Grown goods and experience Connecticut agriculture.  It is also a place to tell the story of CT farms and the businesses that support them! Make sure to take their 10% Pledge. See more HERE

     

    • LocalHarvest-LocalHarvest is a terrific local food website. They maintain a definitive and reliable "living" public nationwide directory of small farms, farmers markets, and other local food sources. Their search engine helps people find products from family farms, local sources of sustainably grown food, and encourages them to establish direct contact with small farms in their local area.
